About the shelter

Hello everyone! My name is Ulyana Bakayeva. I am the founder and director of the shelter for special animals - "Fund of Good Deeds Almaty".

 It all started when I found a puppy with a spinal cord injury, meaning it had no chance...and I just brought it home, cried and said I couldn't put it down, it couldn't walk and I couldn't kill it. Unfortunately, the little guy didn't make it. After that I realized that we have to help these special ones.....

 In the beginning, I had about 30 animals at home, along with cats. There were abandoned animals that were left or thrown away by their owners, and volunteers would find them and call me and ask me to take them. Often there were animals that had been mutilated by children, there were a lot of pedigree animals. I mean, if it used to be that if you bought an animal for a lot of money, it was a guarantee of its happy life... now it is not, they give up very rare breeds, very expensive breeds.....

 Soon it became unrealistic to keep so many animals at home. And I got Barik! He had been hit in a parking lot and was ridden again, just to be sure...and as a result, his hind leg was amputated. When they brought him in, he had big stitches all over his body. He had to be treated and he cried so much. He and I cried together while his stitches were being treated. Actually, thanks to him, I realized that I want to open a shelter for such special animals. After all, the absence of a paw is a horror for many people, and they - the animals - become unwanted.

 And now Barik is the head of the shelter, he is always in the center of attention, the most important leader in the walking area. Those who have been to our shelter have seen how Barik drives everyone away and scandals, but he is also very vulnerable. He's afraid of strangers.

 At the moment we have in our shelter:
 - About 270 dogs: most of them are handicapped with the absence of one or even two legs, nose, internal organs, more than 50 big dogs (rescued from the catching service, from the streets, from fights), more than 20 aggressive dogs condemned to die in the catching service or at the hands of "owners"... well or thrown under the gates of the shelter;
 -12 cats (abandoned because of their physical characteristics, missing paws, head and brain injuries); 
 - bottle-fed lambs and baby goats;
- turkeys rescued from the slaughterhouse;
 - Zhorik the rabbit, bought back from the slaughterhouse; - and even Sonya the raccoon, rescued from a petting zoo.

 We are constantly building, trying to improve the conditions for our charges, and we have big plans for the future. And our tails, on the other hand, are always waiting and happy to welcome guests to the shelter. They love "goodies" and walks with people. Come to the shelter, it's the best thing you can do for them. They all need human attention and warmth!
