Making animal shelters easier to find

  • HelpShelter is a growing global platform for discovering animal shelters, learning about their work, and connecting with them directly. We give organizations of all sizes a place to be seen and help more people find a meaningful way to support them.

  • Why we exist

Animal shelters do essential work, but information about them is often scattered across websites, social media, public directories, and local sources. Smaller organizations can be especially difficult to discover beyond their existing communities. We bring this information together in one place, making it easier for people to find animal shelters around the world and understand how they can help.

  • What we do

HelpShelter organizes publicly available information about animal shelters, including their location, the animals in their care, contact details, official social media profiles, and available ways to provide support. We do not process donations or represent the shelters listed on our platform. Instead, we help visitors reach organizations through their official channels and support them directly.

Good work should be discoverable

How we select and verify shelters

Before adding a shelter to HelpShelter, we research its activity using publicly available information. Our goal is to build a clear and realistic picture of the organization and help visitors connect with it through official channels.

Report an update
  • 1.  Official presence and contact details

We look for an official website, active social media profiles, email addresses, phone numbers, a postal address, and information about the shelter’s physical location.

  • 2.  Evidence of ongoing activity

Recent posts, original photos and videos, updates about animals, adoption stories, fundraising activity, and interactions with the community help us understand whether the shelter is currently active.

  • 3.  The people behind the shelter

Whenever possible, we look for information about the organization’s founders, team members, volunteers, and history. Clear information about the people involved helps establish the shelter’s identity and continuity.

  • 4.  Independent sources

We may cross-check shelter information through news articles, interviews, public directories, videos, partner organizations, and other independent sources.

  • 5.  Legal and financial information

Where this information is publicly available, we review nonprofit registration details, donation information, public databases, and financial or activity reports.

  • 6.  Public reputation

We may also consider reviews, public mentions, community feedback, and the consistency of information across different platforms. These are treated as supporting signals rather than proof on their own.

Every shelter is different

Not every organization has a website, public reports, or a large social media presence. Smaller shelters may have limited time and resources for communication, so we consider the overall context rather than requiring every shelter to meet the same checklist.

Information published on HelpShelter is collected from publicly available sources and may change over time. We encourage visitors to confirm contact and donation details through the shelter’s official channels before providing support.

Why is it important to help shelters?

Shelters take in animals that have nowhere else to go, usually before knowing where the next month’s funds will come from. Almost all of them run on donations, and most are small enough that a single contribution is noticeable.

Helping does not have to mean money. Supplies, volunteer time, fostering, or passing a shelter’s page to someone who can do more — each reaches the same place. Find one whose work you want to back, and go to them directly.

Helping is only half the answer

Supporting animal shelters is important, but it is only a band-aid solution to the problem of pet overpopulation.

To make a real difference, it is vital to educate people about the importance of neutering their pets and the responsibility that comes with adopting a pet.

Educating people can prevent more unwanted animals from being born and reduce the number of animals in shelters in the long term.

That’s why we encourage you to read what Humane World for Animals has to say about spaying and neutering.
