About the shelter

Street Hearts BG is an NGO based in Bulgaria, founded in 2015 by Anthony and Emma Smith. We aim to end the suffering of dogs in Bulgaria. In order to achieve this, we have several approaches to tackle the issues affecting dogs. Firstly, we have an emphasis on neutering and spaying. This is an effective control in reducing the stray dog population and preventing unwanted puppies on the streets. Our main aim is to neuter street dogs and work with owners to educate and facilitate neutering their pets. Many dogs have been abandoned on the streets because they are ill, pregnant, or the owners simply do not want them anymore. By educating and providing free neutering, we aim for this problem to decrease Previously, we neutered and released dogs; however, many dogs on the streets are discarded pets. Experience showed released dogs were unable to survive on the streets and faced starvation, abuse, and even poisoning. Due to this, we rescue as many dogs as our capacity allows, always accepting puppies. After rescuing dogs, we commit to finding forever homes for them, wherever that may be.

 All the dogs rescued by Street Hearts BG are socialised and lead trained, and are fully vaccinated and neutered before being transported to the UK. Street Hearts BG also provides a lifetime rescue backup for every dog we rescue, to ensure that each dog will be cared for and, if necessary, we will rehome dogs again should their new owners have to let them go. Despite our network in place to help rehome dogs in the UK, Street Hearts BG needs your help. We currently have a long waiting list of dogs in Bulgaria to rescue. Some dogs are not fit to be returned to the streets due to illness, injury, or simply because they will be harmed by people. We rehabilitate these dogs, train them, and look to find them homes at our fully licensed dog shelter. All puppies that we find are kept by us so that they can be rehomed and have a life that all dogs deserve. We have a small annual budget from the municipality for neutering dogs, which quickly runs out, as we are neutering (on average) six dogs a week. We rely on fundraising events and public donations to fund neutering, medical care, food, and build suitable facilities for the dogs.

 Without your donations, we can't continue our work. We have neutered numerous dogs and cats, treated sick animals, funded surgeries, and successfully rehomed many dogs.
