The history of the organization began in 2001, when the Charitable Foundation “Help for Homeless Dogs” was registered in St. Petersburg. The Foundation operated a shelter in the Primorsky district. In 2019, the shelter moved to a new site in Nevsky district. In 2007, the Help for Stray Dogs Charitable Foundation was accepted as a member of the Royal Society for the Protection of Animals of Great Britain WSPA. Our Mission and Goals ∙Expansion and development of the shelter. ∙Introduction of new projects aimed at protection of homeless animals and humane control over their population in the city of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region. ∙Expansion of cooperation with other animal protection organizations in Russia and abroad. ∙Prevention of cases of cruelty to animals. ∙Raising the level of ethical and humane attitude towards animals in the society. ∙Improvement and strengthening of legislation aimed at animal protection. Our shelters are located in Nevsky district of St. Petersburg. The shelters have organized living, walking enclosures for dogs, a “Cat House”, a veterinary block, rooms for storing food and washing bowls, a pharmacy room, and grooming facilities. When an animal is received at the shelter, a personal card is made for each animal, which includes data on vaccination, sterilization, reasons for coming to the shelter, information on physical condition and character, and a mark with the date of transfer to the family. All animals in the shelter are supervised by staff and veterinarians 24 hours a day. The organization focuses on finding new families for the shelter's pets. We do not aim to give the animal away as quickly as possible, we try to find truly loving and responsible people who will be able to give the animal care and attention. All animals are transferred to families according to certain rules. Most of the shelter's pets are not young, have various chronic diseases, disabilities; it is quite difficult to find a family for such animals. We believe that any living creature has the right to a decent old age and we do everything possible to provide it in the shelter. And when an old animal leaves the shelter for a new home, we have a real celebration! In addition to the activities of the shelter itself, there is a well-developed network of volunteers. It includes people of different ages, interests and social status. They provide great support to the shelter itself and do a great job of rescuing homeless animals in St. Petersburg and the suburbs of the northern capital.
