About the shelter

Datcha is an animal shelter in Moldova, dedicated to rescuing homeless, mistreated, injured and abused animals from the streets. We are located at 30 km distance from Chisinau, the country’s capital. In 2013 with financial help from a small group of animal lovers from Germany, Datcha came to life. The shelter is run by Ira Marcu, a Moldovan who dedicates her life and works tirelessly to save animals in need. Many of our dogs and cats have been saved from the city’s death kennel, rescued from the streets after having been hit by a car, saved from abusive treatment by their owners, found dumped near or inside trash containers, or cowardly abandoned at our gates in card boxes or in the forrest surrounding our shelter - just to name a few. At Datcha they have access to water, food, medical care and cuddles. In 2016, two French volunteers decided to create the Datcha France association to help Datcha, who was sorely lacking in financial means and who did not carry out any adoption in Moldova. Unfortunately, adoptions from Moldova to EU are prohibited, the association now organizes dog adoptions from neighboring Romania, continuing to donate the few profits to the Datcha shelter. Today Dacha is still sorely lacking in resources, especially at a time of rising energy and food prices, and also as a result of the war in nearby Ukraine. We do not receive any government funding and rely solely on your kind donations! We constantly struggle financially to meet the basic needs of the shelter: food, medication, salary for the caretakers, maintenance of the shelter and the kennels, etc.
