HAR - Helping Animals Romania Our shelter - the "ISLAND OF HOPE" is a private registered animal shelter near the capital Bucharest - belongs to the miserable and desperate - the "underdogs" in the worst sense of the word. We originally came here to reduce the number of stray dogs and cats by neutering them, to care for them and provide them with medical treatment until adoptive homes could be found for them or to return healthy animals to their original homes. We had no idea that we were opening a dam, no idea how big the plight of the abandoned animals really was - although we could have known. Nor did we realize how many deliberately injured and mutilated animals we would collect; nor that puppies would be thrown over the gate almost every day and how much hunger and fear we would encounter as soon as we left the shelter ... Nevertheless, we stay here and do everything in our power - for the animals in this region, for the currently 300 dogs (and a large number of cats) that now live in the only shelter that stands between them and their misery... The land and the buildings on it do not belong to us. We have to pay a high monthly rent, because it is a fallacy that everything is cheaper here - neither vets nor medication cost less ... HAR is financed exclusively by donations. Every donation is welcome: Food, medical supplies - and money too, of course. We ask for sponsorships of various kinds: one-off sponsorships for departures; for medical emergencies; for neutering, for those who have not found adopters, those who have been here since puppyhood, the elderly, the sick and injured, the nursing mothers with their children. They only have us .... Perhaps they will soon have you too?
