About the shelter

Footprints of Joy is the flagship project of Save the Dogs, a leading animal welfare organisation that helps animals in need in Romania, Ukraine and Italy. At our headquarters in Cernavodă, Romania, we rescue dogs, cats, horses and donkeys that have been subjected to cruelty, provide them with medical treatment and offer them the highest quality care in a specialised and peaceful environment. Throughout our 20 years in business, Save the Dogs has helped thousands of animals. In Romania we have been managing the dog and cat population since 2002, sterilising tens of thousands of dogs and cats.
To protect the dignity and welfare of animals through a collaborative approach that includes reducing uncontrolled births and raising awareness of our responsibility towards animals. Our programmes in Romania include adoptions, veterinary assistance for pet owners who cannot afford medical care, education and outreach programmes in rural areas. From 2022 we are helping Ukrainian animals. On the one hand we have provided assistance to over 1,000 Ukrainian refugees who have come to Romania with their pets, and on the other we have sent over 700 tons of dog and cat food to animal shelters and volunteers in Ukraine.
