About the shelter

Einfach Tierschutz e.V. is a recognised non-profit animal welfare organisation, founded in 2016 with the aim of helping street dogs where the need is greatest. This is especially the case in Eastern and Southern European countries, where dogs, and especially street dogs, often have a hard time due to the poverty of the population and the government's lack of interest in investing in this problem. Founded just a few years ago, we have already achieved a great deal: Einfach Tierschutz e.V. now owns and operates two animal shelters in Braila, Romania. In our "Phoenix Shelter", which covers an area of 10,000 m², around 400 dogs and now also some cats are cared for, medically treated and socialised every day.

From spring 2020, we will be running our second dedicated puppy shelter, the Phoenix Puppy Shelter, where up to 50 puppies and young dogs will be cared for and prepared for adoption on 2,000 square metres. In 2020, we will also be able to fulfil a long-held ambition to build a cat house on our site, providing a safe and appropriate home for our cats. A primary goal of our work is to place as many dogs and cats as possible in loving and safe homes in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. We aim to provide a safe haven for dogs whose socialisation does not make them suitable for life as a family dog. Here they will have the best life possible, without being exposed to hunger, disease or the cold Romanian winter weather, in a stable and stress-free environment with their fellow dogs. Another aim is to make a significant contribution to the solution of the street dog problem through regular neutering campaigns and to bring about a change in the way the local population deals with the problem.

 Every year, thousands of unwanted puppies end up on the streets or in municipal animal shelters, which have to put them down after two weeks if they are overcrowded. That is why, since May 2019, we have been carrying out regular neutering campaigns in Braila: anyone living in the region can have their animals neutered by us, free of charge. All costs for neutering and aftercare will be covered by Einfach Tierschutz e.V.. We finance the care of our approximately 400 animals and the neutering campaigns exclusively through donations and the membership fees of our currently over 6000 members.

 How it all began In 2017, a special situation arose for the still young association Einfach Tierschutz e.V.: an animal shelter in Braila, Romania, which we had already supported financially and with local help, was about to close because the city did not want to extend the lease with this shelter. For many of the approximately 400 dogs living at the shelter at the time, the closure would most likely have meant death at the city shelter's killing station. Einfach Tierschutz e.V. could not and would not allow this to happen, so we leased and eventually bought the entire shelter. We gave it a name that symbolises our hope of being able to offer a safe and loving future to all the animals there: "Phoenix Shelter.
