In 2002, a woman named Corina Grigore began volunteering to care for stray dogs at the Galati Municipal Animal Shelter in Galati, Romania. In 2006, the local authorities began to deny volunteers access to the shelter because of the way the animals were being treated: abuse, starvation, unethical euthanasia protocols. Corina could not turn a blind eye to the hundreds of thousands of Romanian animals in need, so in 2004 the Help Labus association was founded with the mission of raising awareness and manpower to help the cause. But it wasn't until 2007, when she sold a piece of land owned by her parents and bought another, more suitable piece of land, that she built her own shelter to care for these innocent creatures. Corina started with 100 dogs. Today there are over 1000 dogs and over 100 cats in her care, hoping to find a peaceful, loving place to call home. While Corina devotes every waking hour and penny to the shelter, it is often very difficult to provide them with food and other necessities, especially during the cold winter months. It is a constant uphill battle to keep the shelter running with so few volunteers, resources and mounting costs, but she will not give up, knowing that the animals in her care are not homeless and are not at risk of being abused, tortured or killed at any time.
