About the shelter

Ostrovok Nadezhdy (translated as Island of Hope) is a private animal shelter located near Chișinău, Moldova, dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating homeless, injured, and abandoned animals. Since its founding, the shelter has grown into a safe haven for over 200 dogs and dozens of cats, many of whom have experienced severe trauma, abuse, or illness before finding refuge here. What sets Ostrovok Nadezhdy apart is the deep emotional connection between the volunteers and the animals. Every animal is treated as an individual, known by name and character. Many of the dogs and cats have disabilities or require special medical attention, and the shelter goes to great lengths to ensure they receive proper care. From wheelchairs for paralyzed dogs to daily medications and surgeries, the team is committed to giving every animal a second chance at life. The shelter operates entirely on donations and volunteer support, without any state funding. Despite limited financial resources, they’ve managed to build not only comfortable living spaces for animals but also an on-site veterinary clinic and a small charity shop. The income from the shop goes directly to food, treatment, and shelter maintenance. The shelter also organizes adoption campaigns, educational outreach, and actively promotes responsible pet ownership in the community. In addition to direct rescue work, Ostrovok Nadezhdy plays an important role in raising awareness about the plight of stray animals in Moldova. Through social media, local partnerships, and media coverage, they share stories of survival and hope, aiming to inspire others to adopt, donate, or volunteer. Their work is both challenging and emotionally taxing, but for the team at Ostrovok Nadezhdy, the reward lies in every healed wound, every wagging tail, and every animal who finds a forever home. The shelter truly lives up to its name—offering hope where it’s needed most. If you'd like to support them, donations of food, medicine, supplies, or funds are always welcomed. Every bit of help makes a difference in the lives of these animals who once had no one.
