Schronisko dla Bezdomnych Zwierząt we Wrocławiu is a large and professionally operated animal shelter in Wrocław, Poland, managed by the non-profit organization TOZ Wrocław (Towarzystwo Opieki nad Zwierzętami). The shelter was founded in 1962 thanks to the determination and efforts of local animal welfare activists. Although independently run, its operations are partially funded by the city of Wrocław through public service contracts. Since 2012, the shelter has been based at a modern facility on Ślazowa Street, built to meet growing needs and improve animal care standards. The complex is one of the largest in the region, with the capacity to accommodate up to 400 animals at a time. On average, the shelter houses between 200 and 300 animals, mainly dogs and cats, but also smaller mammals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, and a number of rescued farm animals including pigs. The facility includes multiple dedicated pavilions, a fully equipped veterinary clinic, isolation and recovery zones, and spacious outdoor runs. Many of the animals arrive in poor condition—sick, abandoned, or mistreated—and require medical treatment, behavioral support, and rehabilitation. A dedicated team of around 30 staff members, including certified animal welfare inspectors, work alongside volunteers to provide daily care, carry out inspections related to cruelty or neglect, and support adoptions. The shelter also runs community education programs, promotes responsible pet ownership, and partners with the city to manage stray animal populations through sterilization and microchipping initiatives. The shelter continues to serve as a vital center of protection, recovery, and second chances for animals in need.
