Fundacja Tara is one of Poland’s oldest farm animal sanctuaries, located in the village of Piskorzyna in Lower Silesia. Established in 1995 by animal rights activist Scarlett Szyłogalis, the foundation began as the country’s first dedicated shelter for horses rescued from slaughter, abandonment, or abuse. Today, Tara is home to over 200 animals, including horses, cows, pigs, goats, sheep, dogs, and cats — all living in safety on a quiet rural estate without fear of exploitation. The animals are not adopted out or used for work. Instead, they remain in sanctuary for life, receiving daily care, veterinary support, and companionship from a dedicated team of caretakers and volunteers. Tara’s mission extends beyond rescue. The foundation runs educational and outreach programs that introduce visitors — especially children and students — to the animals in their care, teaching respect, empathy, and the ethics of coexistence. They also advocate for systemic change. Tara has led national campaigns to protest cruel horse markets and to demand that horses be legally recognized as companion animals rather than livestock. These efforts are supported by petitions, media outreach, and public demonstrations, often in collaboration with other advocacy groups. The sanctuary does not receive government funding and exists solely thanks to donations, sponsorships, and Poland’s 1.5% public tax designation. All funds go directly toward the care of the animals and the maintenance of the sanctuary grounds. Tara is widely recognized for its transparent values, unwavering ethics, and long-term commitment to protecting animals that would otherwise be forgotten. Through its work, the foundation not only provides refuge — it also builds awareness, shifts attitudes, and defends the idea that animals are not property, but individuals with the right to live peacefully.
