About the shelter

Pesaleidja MTÜ: Estonia's Leading Volunteer-Driven Cat Shelter Pesaleidja MTÜ stands as Estonia's largest volunteer-based animal welfare organization, dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming homeless cats. Operating under a strict no-kill policy, the shelter ensures that every healthy or treatable cat receives the care and opportunity for a new life.

History and Founders Established in 2009 by a group of passionate animal lovers, Pesaleidja began as a network of foster homes. In 2012, the organization opened its first physical shelter in Tallinn, providing a centralized location for cat care and adoption. By 2015, Pesaleidja MTÜ was officially registered as a non-profit organization, with Katrin Paala-Vainola and Oliver Vainola playing pivotal roles in its development and administration.

Operations and Care Currently, Pesaleidja cares for approximately 400 cats. Notably, about half of these cats reside in the main shelter located in Tallinn, while the other half are placed in foster homes managed by dedicated volunteers across the country. This dual approach allows the organization to provide personalized care and socialization for each cat, increasing their chances of successful adoption. Veterinary Clinic To ensure comprehensive medical care, Pesaleidja operates its own charitable veterinary clinic, Pesaleidja Loomakliinik OÜ. This facility offers essential health services, including vaccinations, treatments, and surgeries, ensuring that all cats receive the necessary medical attention before finding their forever homes.

Sponsors and Support Pesaleidja's mission is supported by various sponsors and donors. For instance, the organization received a €5,000 donation from the "Aitan Eestit" initiative, which was utilized to renovate and furnish the cat room, creating a more comfortable environment for the feline residents. Additionally, companies like Wisercat have contributed to the shelter's operations, highlighting the community's commitment to animal welfare. Get Involved Individuals interested in supporting Pesaleidja can contribute through donations, volunteering, or adopting a cat. The organization welcomes assistance in various forms, from financial support to hands-on care, reflecting its community-driven ethos.
