Gouves Animal Shelter

About the shelter

Gouves Animal Shelter is a non-profit organization located in Gournes, on the island of Crete, Greece. Founded out of compassion and a desire to help, the shelter is now home to more than 200 dogs and 200 cats each month. The shelter provides food, medical care, shelter, and a second chance at life to animals who have been abused, abandoned, or neglected. In addition to rescue and rehabilitation, the shelter runs neutering and educational programs aimed at improving animal welfare laws and transforming public attitudes toward stray animals.
The story of Gouves Animal Shelter began with Mr. Manolis, a man whose tireless dedication laid the foundation for everything the shelter is today. For over a decade, he balanced full-time night shifts while spending his days at the shelter, caring for animals in all seasons, without fail. Even when unwell, he remained present — a true example of selfless devotion. Though health issues have forced him to slow down, his legacy continues through the committed team of volunteers who carry the shelter forward. Today, a small but passionate group of locals and supporters from abroad manage daily care, medical needs, and essential operations, often in addition to their own full-time jobs.
The shelter, located on what was once a U.S. military base, has grown from a small kennel into a safe and expanding haven for animals in need. Dogs and cats are housed in clean, shaded spaces with proper shelter and bedding, separate areas for puppies and recovering animals, and even a play area where they can run freely and socialize with volunteers. The shelter is constantly evolving, with renovations and improvements made whenever resources allow.
While Gouves Animal Shelter receives no government funding, it continues to change lives thanks to the kindness of donors and the dedication of volunteers. Many of the animals rescued here are adopted across Europe and the United States. For those who wish to support the shelter, every act of kindness — whether adopting, donating, or simply spreading the word — helps keep this lifeline alive. Gouves is more than just a shelter. It's a place of hope, healing, and the belief that every animal deserves a second chance.
