Save a Greek Stray (SGS)

About the shelter

Save a Greek Stray is a non-profit animal welfare organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming stray animals in Greece. Founded by Erietta Kourkoulou-Latsis, the organization envisions a future where no animal suffers on the streets. Located in Oropos, Attica, the shelter provides a safe and nurturing environment for abandoned, abused, and injured dogs and cats, offering them a second chance at life.
At the heart of Save a Greek Stray's mission is the belief that every animal deserves a loving home. The shelter operates with a fully equipped veterinary clinic, ensuring that all rescues receive medical attention, vaccinations, microchipping, and sterilization before being placed for adoption. For those unable to be rehomed immediately, the shelter offers a compassionate, long-term care program, providing food, medical treatment, and socialization in a safe environment. The organization also runs an extensive Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program, which plays a crucial role in controlling the stray animal population humanely and sustainably.
With hundreds of animals under its care at any given time, Save a Greek Stray relies on a dedicated team of volunteers and veterinarians who work tirelessly to improve the lives of Greece’s stray animals. The shelter operates entirely on donations and corporate sponsorships, with partners including Royal Canin, ZeniΘ, Europa Insurance, and Stray Dog Gin, among others. Public support is essential to sustaining its work, whether through monetary contributions, food and medical supply donations, or volunteer efforts. Those who cannot adopt can still help by fostering animals, sponsoring specific rescues, or supporting the shelter’s fundraising initiatives.
Beyond its rescue and adoption programs, Save a Greek Stray is committed to educating the public on responsible pet ownership and advocating for stronger animal protection laws in Greece. The shelter has built a strong community of supporters both locally and internationally, working towards a future where every stray animal is given the chance to experience love and security.
Entirely dependent on the kindness of animal lovers, Save a Greek Stray continues to transform lives, one rescue at a time. Through their efforts, thousands of dogs and cats have found homes, while many more have received the care they desperately needed. Supporting this shelter means becoming part of a movement that refuses to turn a blind eye to the suffering of strays and instead fights for their right to a better life.
