The Yedikule Animal Shelter, home to nearly 3,000 dogs, was established in 2001. Covering a total area of 8,000 m², the shelter also features a 500 m² landscaped walking area. The center operates with a team of 12 staff members and is managed by volunteer architect Meral Olcay. The shelter operates on a donation-based system, relying on the generosity of individuals who contribute supplies instead of direct financial support. Visitors are encouraged to help by bringing essential items such as food, medicine, and bedding. Additionally, an innovative adoption program allows people to sponsor a dog, covering its medical and food expenses while it remains in the shelter. This unique initiative ensures that every adopted dog contributes to the well-being of others. Yedikule is not just a shelter—it’s a community-driven effort that has gained widespread recognition. It serves as a model for other municipalities, with various city officials seeking guidance for establishing similar facilities. Through the power of media, online outreach, and school visits, the shelter raises awareness about animal welfare, fostering a compassionate approach toward stray animals.
